The story behind the design: Squaring the Circle.
The design on this tee is inspired by the age-old problem of squaring the circle. Using only a ruler and compass, without measuring lengths and angles, it is impossible to draw a square and circle of equal circumference and area. There are methods known for approaching this.
The problem of squaring the circle becomes clearer with the use of numbers. To be able to calculate the properties of a circle you need the number π (3.14159 …). This is an irrational number that does not repeat and is infinite in length. The number π is the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle.
In this design squares are drawn with sides that are equal to the diameter of the circles. The first square has a side with the length of 2 units. The first circle has a diameter of 2 units. Both forms are then enlarged by 1 unit on all sides. In the pattern that arises, the third square intersects the fourth circle. In the next step, where the fourth square intersects the fifth circle, the circumference of both shapes is virtually the same.
A few steps further, where the seventh square intersects the ninth circle, the circumference is again almost the same. Only the difference between the perimeter of the square and the circle is smaller than between the fourth square and the fifth circle. This pattern repeats itself and becomes more and more accurate, without reaching an actual equal circumference.
This pattern shows a wonderful relationship between the two forms.
Our t-shirts are inspired by patterns and proportions found in nature through the principles of sacred geometry. It is referred to as the architecture of the universe and its patterns are literally everywhere. In space, on earth, in flora and fauna and even in our own bodies.
